Evacuation Procedures for Individuals with Disabilities

AMMERMAN CAMPUS
(Brief Summary)

Whenever there is a need to evacuate College buildings, the designated College employee2 should proceed as follows:

1. Ask if anyone needs assistance.

2. Solicit volunteers to provide support; if no volunteers exist call (631) 451-4242 from a cell phone or 311 from a campus phone to say that you are with someone who will need assistance. Then if you can; move or escort the individual to a staircase landing.

Special Note: Volunteers should not attempt to carry down occupied wheelchairs since they are heavy and require special training, physical fitness, or equipment.

3. Arrange for individuals with visual or hearing impairments and/or minor mobility impairments to be escorted outside of the building.

4. Instruct individuals with serious mobility impairments to wait until the area has been cleared, then:

a. if there is direct access to a building exit, escort the individual outside of the building.
b. if there is no direct access to a building exit:

  • Escort the individual to the nearest Emergency Safe Haven (see list below).
  • If the Emergency Safe Haven is in an enclosed stairwell, take the individual first to the nearby Temporary Safe Haven until the stairwell traffic has ceased.
  • Once in the Emergency Safe Haven or stairwell landing, call again using the stair landing emergency phone or your cell phone to indicate your position.

5. The phone call you make to our dispatcher will send out a radio message to the responders that we have someone in the building with needs. As outside responders arrive for help, Public Safety is informing them of priority evacuations. The stairwell landings with their doors closed are rated to be fire-safe for 1.5 hours.
