Center for Teaching and Learning

Welcome to the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). CTL reports to the Office of Academic Affairs, and as such, provides leadership for designing and implementing faculty and professional development programs that advance the college mission, that reflect research-based best practices related to community college instruction, and that foster a sense of community for faculty who wish to enact continuous improvement of their teaching practice.

Our Goals

The work of CTL is driven by three main goals:

  1. Collaborating with faculty to provide high-quality instruction (focused on student learning, student engagement, student retention, and assessment);
  2. Creating faculty and professional development that emphasizes student-centered use of academic technologies for teaching in all instructional delivery modalities, and;
  3. Exploring pedagogies that focus on equity in access, instruction, and assessment.

Our History

Prior to 2017, each campus had its own Teaching and Learning Center (TLC). The TLCs provided faculty with technical assistance and hosted faculty-run workshops on an array of topics related to technology and pedagogy.

In 2017, the Office of Instructional Technology was restructured and renamed the Center for Innovative Pedagogy (CIP). The aim of CIP was to support faculty with best practices in teaching. During the Covid-19 pandemic, CIP was at the forefront of empowering faculty to pivot to remote instruction. The CIP team trained about 750 faculty members in online teaching pedagogy and the use of the learning management system.

In 2023, CIP changed its name to the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The department鈥檚 mission has expanded to include best practices in all teaching modalities.
