Veterans Day 2022: ɫý – A Best for Vets College -- Celebrates All Who Served
College General Counsel and Marine Corps veteran Louis Petrizzo presents a copy of
“Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima,” an iconic photograph of six United States Marines
raising the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in the final
stages of the Pacific War during World War II, that is signed by Medal of Honor (MoH)
recipient Hershel Williams. Williams was the last living MoH recipient from World
War II who died this past July. Williams was awarded the MoH for his heroic actions
on Iwo Jima. College Director of Veterans Affairs Shannon O’Neill, center, accepted
the framed icon for display in the Veterans Resource Center on the Ammerman Campus
in Selden. Elyse Quirk, Veterans Center professional assistant is at left.
ɫý celebrates all things veterans with a robust schedule
of Veterans Day events that commenced on Monday November 7 and conclude on Monday
November 14 and applauds its recent recognition as a 2022 Best for Vets College.
Suffolk has been named a Best for Vets College for the fourth consecutive year, according
to College Director of Veterans Affairs Shannon O’Neill.
“ɫý is proud to be recognized, once again, as a “Best for Vets” school,” said ɫý President Dr. Edward Bonahue.
“Whether our military-affiliated students hope to advance their military careers or transition into civilian life, ɫý honors their service by providing the needed tools for success,” Bonahue said.
“ɫý is honored to be ranked, 16th in the northeast region
and 21st among community colleges in the nation. We are so proud to once again receive
this designation.”
The designation is a testament to our strong academic programs as well as the collaborative
efforts to provide exemplary service to our military connected students. Special thanks
to the staff in the Veterans Resource Centers that go above and beyond to serve our
students and provide exemplary services and continued community to assure their success
in and out of the classroom,” said ɫý’s Director of
Veterans Services Shannon O’Neill.
ɫý provides a Veterans Resource Center on each of its three campuses staffed by experts that are knowledgeable about a variety of military and veteran education benefits.
