Cell phones are wonderful devices, they allow us to stay in touch with friends, keep appointments, take photos, send email, and surf the web. They are also very easy to lose and targets for theft. Taking these simple precautions will enhance your safety and lessen the risk of loss or theft of your phone.
Tips
- Program the Public Safety phone number (631.451.4242) into your phone;
- Load a ‘find my phone’ app;
- Password protect your phone;
- Do not leave your phone unattended, unattended phones are easy to steal;
- Never allow a stranger to use your phone, if they are claiming an emergency offer to make the call for them;
- Frequently backup your phone, either to your computer or an online backup service;
- Carry your phone with you at all times; and
- Report suspicious activity to the Public Safety department @ 631.451.4242.
Having your cell phone lost or stolen can be a traumatic event. You don’t just lose an expensive item you potentially grant access to a stranger to your personal information, including your contact list, calendars, passwords, and photos.
If your phone is lost or stolen, follow these tips to help increase the likelihood of its return and limit the exposure of your personal information.
- Immediately contact your wireless provider to suspend your service;
- Remotely lock your phone;
- Check with your campus Public Safety Office to determine if your phone has been found;
- Utilize your phone’s remote location app; and
- If your phone cannot be found remotely wipe it protect your personal information.
It is important for you to suspend your cell service as soon as possible. Remember that you can always reactivate your phone if it is recovered.
